Junior Sailing Since 1887

November 2007

With the boats covered in shrink wrap, the docks hauled, and sailors back at school, the summer days at Pleon seem like ages ago. However, it is hard to forget such a busy summer; one that marked our 120th season. As the oldest youth sailing program in America, we have a formidable resume of successes over the years, and the summer of 2007 was no different.

This summer we had over 200 sailors enrolled in twelve classes ranging from learn to sail to our traveling race teams. Pleon continues to attract a world class instructional staff from across America and around the globe, coming from New Zealand, Great Britain and a host of U.S. colleges and universities. We strive to give our sailors the best instructors available.

Whether enrolled in our newly improved Adventure Sail Program or one of our racing teams, Pleon sailors found countless successes on and off the water. Trevor Burd, Callie Naughton, and Fritz Stunzi placed third in the Sears Cup, the US Triple Handed Championship, Ian Barrows placed 12th at the Optimist Worlds in Italy, and Callie Naughton qualified for the Olympic Trials in the Laser Radials. Pleon graduates continue to find the same success as they advance in the sport through college and beyond. Congratulations to Pleon alumnae Tomas Hornos who won the Snipe North Americans, Ian Cook for placing 9th in the Finn Olympic Trials, and former Commodore Lisa Keith for winning the Team Racing Worlds, Nationals, and Wilson Trophy as a member of Team Silver Panda.

This year we lived up to Pleon's reputation as one of the premiere regatta hosts and venues. We hosted the largest Marblehead Junior Race Week ever with over 200 boats and more than 300 sailors. After an incredible Race Week, we welcomed 50 young women to Marblehead for the Leiter Cup, the US Junior Women's Single Handed Championship. This was extra special for us as we celebrated the 70th Anniversary of our own woman's trophy, the Venture Trophy, donated by Nancy Leiter Clagget as Fleet Captain in 1937.

While justifiably proud of a long and storied tradition, we realize that our responsibility is to maintain and build upon this legacy. Pleon is a non profit organization that relies on your annual support to continue to provide the quality instruction, support services, and equipment that makes Pleon such an exceptional program. We hope that you will consider making a gift to help Pleon fulfill our goal of providing a quality junior sailing experience for the community.  Please send your tax deductible donation to: Pleon Yacht Club, P.O.
