Week 7 Update
August 9, 2019

Good Afternoon Pleon!

We've had one of the most fun weeks at Pleon I can remember for a while! We began the week with four different regattas - Squam Day, Duxbury, BBR, and Scituate. With close to half the club participating in at least one of these events, Pleon sailors did an amazing job representing Marblehead: cleaning up the podium in Opti green fleet at Squam Day, making Gold Fleet in 420s at BBR, and fence-posting Opti Green at Scituate (all bullets). Congratulations to all of our sailors!

Although these were the last events of the summer, there's still more to come! Opti New Englands and Halloween Howls (Optis and 420s) will both take place this fall. If you want to keep on training and/or go to these events this fall, you can find out more about our fall sailing program here. We will be sailing for eight full weekends with top level coaching. Sailors must be comfortable sailing in 10-15 knots of breeze consistently.

Meanwhile back at home, we've been starting to wrap up the summer with all sorts of fun competitions and games. We had our last Movie Night and Terrific Tuesday, followed by a very successful Commodore's Ball on Wednesday night. On Tuesday, the afternoon classes competed for the Carlton Trophy (match racing 420s). This was followed by the Venture and Man Trophies. This year's venture trophy took the form of team racing, where the older girls helped the younger sailors learn how to sail a 420. Meanwhile, the boys of Pleon became men with painted-on facial hair, barefoot sprints (ow!), and racing around Children's Island in ‘alternative' boats. On Friday, the older kids are competing for the America's Cup in Sonars. This morning the Keelboat sailors also got a second chance to sail on the Viking Ship Polaris.

This week also saw the last day of Intro to Pleon. It was fun meeting all of the younger sailors and we hope to see their faces around next year!

As with this past week, we have lots of fun events planned for next week, so pay attention to the following schedule:

  • Monday from 12-1 at the Grassy knoll will be the most important event of the entire summer: CLUB ELECTIONS! In addition to voting for next year's Commodore and executive committee, the younger kids will have the chance to sign up for one of the many important committees the club has to offer: Flag, Race, Grounds, and House and Entertainment Committees. Show up to this one!

  • Also on Monday, rescheduled from last week because of the storm, will be Sailor's Ball for kids 12 and under. Tickets are $10 and there will be food, games, dancing, photo booths, and more! Make sure to dress up!

  • Tuesday will be Great Day! (suuuupppper great) Kids 12 and under from 9-12, and kids 13+ from 1-4. There will be tons of games like egg toss, slip n' slide, mud wrestling, and more

    • At NOON SHARP there will be an all-club picture, followed by a Cake Fight!

    • Make sure to bring a cake in before noon to be judged! Pleon-themed designs get extra points.

  • All Pleon sailors and families are invited to the Awards Banquet next Wednesday from 6-8pm at the Marblehead Highschool cafeteria. We will be presenting perpetual and sailing trophies. Please bring a dessert to share with everyone!

    • There will be no actual food served so please eat dinner before

  • Friday will be the last day of classes :(

I hope to see you all on Wednesday!
