Weekly News and Updates
July 18, 2008

Dear Pleon Families,

Can you believe that this marks the end of the third week of Pleon! Wow, time sure flies when having so much fun!  Next week is Marblehead Junior Race Week in which there is NO REGULAR classes all next week.

Highlights of the week:

1) Ken Legler, the college sailing coach for Tufts, ran an all day clinic for the 420 class on Monday. The clinic focused on spinnakers, starts, and speed! There was a great turn out! A big thanks to Ken and all those who participated!

2) The week brought in light breeze; however, the coaches and kids have made the most of it by planning fun activities at Crocker Park, Brown's Island, having scavenger hunts around the harbor, tipping practices, ice cream, and more!

3) The Intro to 420 Session 1 program wrapped up on Friday. Without a doubt, the sailors learned not only the basics of the 420, but rigged spinnakers and finished the session with a mini-regatta! The second 420 session will start Monday, July 28th.

4) Terrific Tuesday was Vintage T-shirt Day! We saw some great old regatta t-shirts dating back to the 80's. Keep checking the calendar and help your sailor get geared up in their Terrific Tuesday wardrobe.

5) There is some extremely close competition for the coin drive. Optimist sailors are currently leading the pack with the lasers, 420's, and adventure classes close behind. Remember to bring in any loose change to help fundraise for the new clubhouse!

Over 30 Pleon sailors attended the Hingham Bay Junior Regatta on Thursday and Friday. Pleon showed all the other clubs up by dominating strong victories in many of the fleets! Congratulations to everyone who participated!

Just a few announcements

* Please CHANGE YOUR CALENDAR: THE COMMODORE'S BALL HAS BEEN SWITCHED FROM THURSDAY, AUGUST 14TH TO TUESDAY, AUGUST 19TH. Please make note of this important change.

* Marblehead Junior Race Week is all next week! There are no regular scheduled classes; however, if your sailor is not sailing and would like to help out being a dolly boy or girl, please have them down at Pleon at 11:30 and 4:00 on Monday, 10:00 and 4:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Have them seek out Commodore Ryan Carney when arriving. Thanks in advance for your help!

* Do you have any extra or used boating supplies in good condition sitting around? Why not donate the supplies, instead of throwing them out. You will be helping kids who can't otherwise afford to learn to sail. Ben Rotner is doing a charity project that will support Courageous Sailing Center in Boston, Mass. This nonprofit community sailing center offers free sailing lessons to children of Boston from all economic and ethnic backgrounds. In addition to learning to sail, Courageous teachers team-building, leadership and communication skills to all its students. Examples of items to donate: lifejackets, sails, sail bags, rigging equipment, blades (centerboard, tiller) sailing boots, lightly used sailing clothing. Donations of small boats (opti, lasers, 420) can also be made to Courageous Sailing Center. A box will be put near the entrance to Pleon if you want to donate, or you can drop off your donation at 44 Lincoln Circle, Swampscott. Any questions, please contact Ben Rotner at (781) 592-3157.

* The Make-A-Wish Regatta is a great opportunity to sail while helping the less fortunate! The officers and members of Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop, MA, are proud to host the 14th Annual Regatta to Benefit the Massachusetts Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation on August 2 & 3, 2008. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has been granting wishes to children ages 2 1/2 years through 18 years old since 1980. These special children have life threatening illnesses and it is our goal to put the dream of a Make-A-Wish child across the finish line in first place with this event. Registration form for Youth Fleet racing can be found on our website at www.cpyc.org along with information about our fund raising raffle and silent auction. If possible, please let us know how many sailors plan to attend by e-mailing us at maw@cpyc.org. Each entry includes one ticket to our dinner on Saturday night. Additional tickets may be purchased.
